Northfield Sesquicentennial Picks ArtOrg for Big Print

The Executive Committee of the Northfield Sesquicentennial Celebration has selected ArtOrg to create a special piece of art that will be unveiled at the Governor’s Ball Celebration on December 17, 2005. Fall Classes: KIDS AFTER SCHOOL

Here is the schedule for the Fall series of classes from ArtOrg for kids after school. Please look at the other “posts” which tell about the other classes offered by ArtOrg for Adults. Register by calling us at 645-2555, in-person by going to The Art Store at 314 Division Street in downtown Northfield, or by mailing us at the address above. Remember, your registration is only valid if you are paid up. Some of the printmaking and other classes have small material fees.

Kids classes are offered each night after school on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for FOUR different age groups. The instructors are “raring to go” so make sure and sign up soon! Thanks for your support.

506 PARENT/CHILD ART
Saturdays, Preschool age 5-7 plus parent, cost $120, ArtOrg 200 Division Street
10 am to 12 noon. Eight weeks from Oct. 1 to Nov. 19.
Children ages 5 to 8 and their parents will create works of art based on a book theme. Small supplies fee payable to instructor.
Connie Conway is the instructor of this class, aand is well-known from her many years teaching in the Northfield School District.

507 ART OUTREACH
Saturdays, Middle ages from 8 to 12, cost: please inquire, Viking Terrace complex
10 am to 12 noon. Eight weeks from Oct. 1 to Nov. 19.
Children ages 8 to 12 will work on various art projects. A significant number of scholarships will be available for this class.
Cynthis Welle was an instructor for the ArtOrg ASAP summer arts program for kids and is an accomplished mask maker.

A1: BOOKMAKING PROJECTS
Mondays, Grades 1 to 3, cost $142, ArtOrg 200 Division Street

Projects in papermaking, writing, and bookmaking for younger kids.
Instructor is Erica Ness, who is an intern in the Farmington School District and also was an assistant in our ASAP summer arts program for kids.

501: OPEN LIVE MODEL DRAWING
Tuesdays, cost $10 members $15 nonmembers, ArtOrg 200 Division Street.
7 to 9 pm Tuesdays.
Drawing from a live model. This open studio has been held every Tuesday night for almost 1 year. We usually start with quick 5-minute sketches and then move into longer poses.

502: OPEN PRINTMAKING STUDIO
Thursdays, $15 members $20 nonmembers plus materials costs, ArtOrg “Two”.
7 to 9 pm. Every Thursday night starting September 29.
Join ArtOrg staff for supervised printmaking in our dedicated studio. Take part in relief, etching, and lithography techniques. Fun.

503: WOMEN ARTISTS
Mondays, ArtOrg 200 Division Street.
7 to 8:30 pm. Five weeks from Oct. 17 to Nov. 14. Cost $68.
This class is a book and discussion group based on the slides set “Women Artists, 1800’s to the Present” by Peterson and Wilson. Connie Conway is the instructor.

504: INTRODUCTION TO SILK PAINTING
Saturday, October 8, 1 to 4:30 pm. $35, plus $20 material fee to instructor.
Women’s Artshare Studio, 101 East 5th St, Suite 305 in Northfield.
3:30 open, instruction from 4 to 6 pm. Eight weeks from Sept. 27 to Nov. 15.
Learn three different silk painting techniques as you paint 2 scarves and 1 bag. All supplies are furnished. Registration limited to 6 students. Connie Conway is the instructor.

505: FIGURE STUDIES
Wednesdays, cost $120, ArtOrg 200 Division Street.
7 to 9 pm. Six weeks from Sept. 29 to Nov. 17.
Figuire drawing has always been the cornerstone of artistic training. The figure presents many technical problems such as line and tone, form and volume, foreshortening and perspective, all of which figure drawing brings to llight. We will explore many drawing techniques working from a live model over 4 weeks allowing each student to refine their drawing skills or develop new approaches to drawing to increase their individual proficiency. The instructor’s teaching style will offer you the ability to work one on one while creating a focus in any area of development which may be of use to you as an artist. The last two sessions will include an introduction to figure sculpture using wire armatures and traditional sculptural techniques. All skill levels. Instructor Elizabeth See is a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago.

508: INTRODUCTION TO BLACKSMITHING
Saturday, October 8 (this date may change—please call for more info).
9 am to 5 pm, cost $80.
In a class given in conjunction with the Guild of Metalsmiths, Herb Fick will introduce the basic aspects of blacksmithing.

509: WATERCOLOR MORNINGS
Monday and Wednesdays, Sept. 26 to Nov. 16, 10 am to 12 noon.
ArtOrg, 200 Division Street (riverside entrance). $160 for one day per week, $280 for two days per week.
Come with an open mind to explore the endless boundaries of watercolor painting. A non-judgmental environment to encourage new discoveries in color, composition and the beauty water can create. All skill levels are encouraged to join. The class will begin with the basics and then will be catered to the individuals’ pace. Let’s play with paint! Instructor is Taylor Franklin–a recent graduate from the U of M studio arts department.

510: STAINED GLASS
Mondays, Nov. 7, 14, 21, 28, 7 pm to 9 pm.

Art from the ASAP kids program that happened this summer is now being displayed in the hallway leading to The Art Store at 317 Divsion Street in Northfield. See all kinds of fun projects and art from a bunch of exciting new artists who run in age from 6 to 12. Special thanks to Connie Conway for organizing this wonderful show!

ArtOrg Mary Grandpre Video to Debut on NTV 12

[Note: please go here to see the Mary Grandpre video.] ArtOrg filmed Mary Grandpre during her recent class where she taught young people in Northfield the ins and outs of pastels and how to draw Harry Potter. Many thanks to Mary, but also to Gerard Lasalle of Lasalle Video Productions in Northfield for his help.

The film runs about 75 minutes and shows Mary interacting with the kids and giving pointers on how an illustrator goes about developing a character. She showed several examples from the book “Plum”, and also read a bit from books in the Harry Potter series.

The show will run on Northfield cable TV station NTV which is channel 12. The schedule is as follows:

John Berkey Show Announced

ArtOrg would like to announce the gallery show of Mr. John Conrad Berkey. John is one of the treasures in the world of illustration, and was named by the 104-year-old Society of Illustrators to its Hall of Fame just last year. Other Society Hall of Fame members include Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth, Frederick Remington, and John James Audubon.

Grant Received for Equipment-Intensive-Studio

ArtOrg has been working on a strategy to give Northfield a special type of resource for artists: the Equipment-Intensive-Studio. In the case of printmaking, ArtOrg had already acquired the equipment and proven that local artists could use it. In fact, our First Edition: a Suite of Stone Lithographs was a good success and sixteen artists and printers were involved in its creation. (A limited number of these wonderful handmade books of 13 original lithographs are still available currently at $400 each. Artists include Somers, Grandpre, Casmer, Krause, Tuel, Alberg, See, Kelly, Reid-Kelley, and others).
