Fall Classes: KIDS AFTER SCHOOL

Here is the schedule for the Fall series of classes from ArtOrg for kids after school. Please look at the other “posts” which tell about the other classes offered by ArtOrg for Adults. Register by calling us at 645-2555, in-person by going to The Art Store at 314 Division Street in downtown Northfield, or by mailing us at the address above. Remember, your registration is only valid if you are paid up. Some of the printmaking and other classes have small material fees.

Kids classes are offered each night after school on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for FOUR different age groups. The instructors are “raring to go” so make sure and sign up soon! Thanks for your support.

CHILDREN’S CLASSES: Special, Preschool and Art Outreach.

506 PARENT/CHILD ART
Saturdays, Preschool age 5-7 plus parent, cost $120, ArtOrg 200 Division Street
10 am to 12 noon. Eight weeks from Oct. 1 to Nov. 19.
Children ages 5 to 8 and their parents will create works of art based on a book theme. Small supplies fee payable to instructor.
Connie Conway is the instructor of this class, aand is well-known from her many years teaching in the Northfield School District.

507 ART OUTREACH
Saturdays, Middle ages from 8 to 12, cost: please inquire, Viking Terrace complex
10 am to 12 noon. Eight weeks from Oct. 1 to Nov. 19.
Children ages 8 to 12 will work on various art projects. A significant number of scholarships will be available for this class.
Cynthis Welle was an instructor for the ArtOrg ASAP summer arts program for kids and is an accomplished mask maker.

CHILDREN’S CLASSES: Grades 1 to 3.

A1: BOOKMAKING PROJECTS
Mondays, Grades 1 to 3, cost $142, ArtOrg 200 Division Street
3:30 open, instruction from 4 to 6 pm. Eight weeks from Sept. 26 to Nov. 14.
Projects in papermaking, writing, and bookmaking for younger kids.
Instructor is Erica Ness, who is an intern in the Farmington School District and also was an assistant in our ASAP summer arts program for kids.

A2: DRAWING SKILLS
Tuesdays, Grades 1 to 3, cost $142, ArtOrg 200 Division Street.
3:30 open, instruction from 4 to 6 pm. Eight weeks from Sept. 27 to Nov. 15.
A structured series of projects and fun to give younger kids better drawing skills.
Instructor is Taylor Franklin, a recent graduate of the U of M Studio Arts department; she taught watercolor in a kid’s camp in Maine this summer.

A3: ARTS EXTRAVAGANZA
Wednesdays, Grades 1 to 3, cost $142, ArtOrg 200 Division Street.
3:30 open, instruction from 4 to 6 pm. Eight weeks from Sept. 28 to Nov. 16.
General fun projects in all types of art.
Instructor is Taylor Franklin, a recent graduate of the U of M Studio Arts department; she taught watercolor in a kid’s camp in Maine this summer.

A4: ARTS 101.
Thursdays, Grades 1 to 3, cost $142, ArtOrg 200 Division Street.
3:30 open, instruction from 4 to 6 pm. Eight weeks from Sept. 29 to Nov. 17.
General fun projects in all types of art in media such as collage, watercolors, and drawing.
Instructor is Hortense MacLeod, who has been active with kids in Northfield in all types of projects. Hortense was the supervisor for the Northfield Union of Youth “Chestnut Tree” restaurant project.

CHILDREN’S CLASSES: Grades 4 and 5.

B1: CLAY CREATIONS
Mondays, Grades 4 and 5, cost $142, ArtOrg 200 Division Street.
3:30 open, instruction from 4 to 6 pm. Eight weeks from Sept. 26 to Nov. 14.
In this class students will learn the basic tenants of clay through hand-build pottery. We will explore cultures, seasons, and holidays through ceramic creations. Through these projects we will learn the techniques of coil pots, slab work, and pinch pots.
Instructor is Christina Osheim, a recent graduate of St. Olaf and an exciting ceramics artist.

B2: DRAWING SKILLS
Tuesdays, Grades 4 and 5, cost $142, ArtOrg 200 Division Street.
3:30 open, instruction from 4 to 6 pm. Eight weeks from Sept. 27 to Nov. 15.
A structured series of projects and fun to give kids better drawing skills.
Instructor is not yet determined.

B3: no class on Wednesdays for this age group.

B4: DRAWING WITH THE OLD MASTERS
Thursdays, Grades 4 and 5, cost $142, ArtOrg 200 Division Street.
3:30 open, instruction from 4 to 6 pm. Eight weeks from Sept. 29 to Nov. 17.
This class will be an introduction into figures, portraits, and ideas through a look at what old masters have done. We will learn about influential artists and make drawings in their styles using pencils, pastels, colored paper and acrylic paints.
Instructor is Christina Osheim, a recent graduate of St. Olaf and an exciting ceramics artist.

MIDDLE KIDS CLASSES: Grades 6 to 8.

C1: RELIEF PRINTMAKING
Mondays, Grades 6 to 8, cost $142, ArtOrg “Two” printmaking studio.
3:30 open, instruction from 4 to 6 pm. Eight weeks from Sept. 26 to Nov. 14.
Students will have the ability to make repeatable images through carving techniques. Available will include linoleum, wood, and plastic. This is one of the easiest types of printmaking to continue at home!
Instructor is Steven “Nuno” Nunez, who works as an assistant in the Carleton Art Department and is a recent graduate in printmaking. Nuno was the assistant in Fred Hagstroms recent class trip to New Zealand and Australia.

C2: PHOTOGRAPHY
Tuesdays, Grades 6 to 8, cost $142, ArtOrg 200 Division Street.
3:30 open, instruction from 4 to 6 pm. Eight weeks from Sept. 27 to Nov. 15.
Photography will be explored through: camera basics, brief coverage of basic chemical composition and safety, B&W film processing, B&W printing, Basic photo composition, Lighting techniques(studio portraiture lighting styles), and if time permits Digital Images & computer photo color balance/alteration (photoshop software).
Instructor is Nate Thomsen who works at Northfield Photo. Bob Anderson who taught photography for many years in the St. Louis Park school system will act as a mentor to Nate for this class.

C3: no class on Wednesdays for this age group.

C4: PERFORMANCE ART AND DIGITAL VIDEO
Thursdays, Grades 6 to 8, cost $142, ArtOrg “Two” printmaking studio.
3:30 open, instruction from 4 to 6 pm. Eight weeks from Sept. 29 to Nov. 17.
In this class, performance art will be explored in all its forms. If time permits, performances will be taped and small video productions will result with more emphasis on the artistic performance than the video technology.
The instructor is Jane Greenwood, who is an experienced performer who has worked most recently at the Minneapolis “Fringe Fest”.

HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES: grades 9 to 12.

D1: INTRODUCTION TO LETTERPRESS
Mondays, Grades 9 to 12, cost $142, ArtOrg “Two” printmaking studio.
3:30 open, instruction from 4 to 6 pm. Eight weeks from Sept. 26 to Nov. 14.
This class will offer an introduction to letterpress printing and students will learn the basics of setting type, operating Challenge proof and pilot presses. Basic project for the class will be to print a small edition of cards using original art or antiques “cuts” and 1 to 2 lines of hand-set type. Learn one of the oldest, but still best, ways to print!
Instructor is Scott King, who has his own business, The Red Dragonfly Press, which prints handmade, limited edition books for many famous authors.

D2: FIGURE DRAWING
Tuesdays, Grades 9 to 12, cost $142, ArtOrg “Two” printmaking studio.
3:30 open, instruction from 4 to 6 pm. Eight weeks from Sept. 27 to Nov. 15.
In this class we will learn about the anatomy of the figure through drawing figures from life. This will consist of gesture drawings, contour drawings, portraiture, and posed figure drawings in pencil, charcoal, India ink, and chalk pastels.
Instructor is Christina Osheim, a recent graduate of St. Olaf and an exciting ceramics artist.

D3: STONE LITHOGRAPHY PRINTING
Wednesdays, Grades 9 to 12, cost $142, ArtOrg “Two” printmaking studio.
3:30 open, instruction from 4 to 6 pm. Eight weeks from Sept. 28 to Nov. 16.
This class will teach the principles of printing repeated images on etched limestone using the idea that oil and water don’t mix. Lithographic images read like drawings and do have subtle qualities that are distinctive and beautiful. This is an equipment-intensive printing process. Be one of the only high-schoolers in the world that learn this technique!

D4: PRINTMAKING OPEN STUDIO.
Thursdays, Grades 9 to 12, cost $142, ArtOrg “Two” printmaking studio.
3:30 open, instruction from 4 to 6 pm. Eight weeks from Sept. 29 to Nov. 17.
In this class, the students will progress at their own speed, directed and challanged by the instructor. Students who are taking the other ArtOrg printmaking classes can use this time to work on and refine concepts started in those classes.
The instructor is Rick Swearer, a working printmaker and president of the ArtOrg Board of Directors.
