ArtOrg Tonight! TV Show Sundays at 10pm

By Dave Machacek

TV ArtOrg would like to announce regular visual arts programming on Northfield’s local cable access NTV channel 12. The inaugural show will be Sunday, June 4 at 10 pm, and continue in that time slot for the foreseeable future.

The purpose of the show is to highlight past events, discuss future topics, and showcase different visual art areas. This summer in particular, we will be showcasing the subject of printmaking by showing several printmaking films. We want to show how prints are made, and maybe even entice a few of you to come and use our 2500-square-foot community printmaking studio!

The lineup so far is:

Sunday, June 4 at 10pm
“Four Stones for Kanemitsu” 1974, 28 minutes, An Academy Award Nominee for Best Documentary (Short Subject), this classic film produced at Tamarind Lithography Workshop shows the collaboration between artist Matsumi Kanemitsu and Master Printer Serge Lozingot as they create a four-color lithograph. Beginning with the graining of the stones, the camera follows the process through the esthetic and technical challenges in drawing, printing, and proofing this complex image. Never before has the actual sense of making a color lithograph in a professional workshop been so vividly and effectively captured in this superb film.

Sunday, June 11 at 10pm
“The Art of Lithography: Working on Stone” 26 minutes, The basics of stone lithography, featuring artist George McNeil and Master Printer Bill Lagattuta. After McNeil draws, paints, and scratches on a lithographic stone, the camera follows Lagatutta and his assistants through the steps of preparing and processing the stone and then printing the edition.

Sunday June 18 at 10pm
Waterfalls of the Mississippi” In this nearly 1 hour video, the printing and production of Richard Fred Arey’s book “Waterfalls of the Mississppi” is showcased. Printer Gaylord Schanilec is featured in this video, and he is the brother of Northfield’s own Rob Schanilec of By All Means Graphics. “Waterfalls” was a 1999 recipient of a Minnesota Book Award.

Sunday June 25 at 10pm
“The Art of Lithography: Working on Plate” 23 minutes, Artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith and Master Printer Jeffrey Sippel collaborate to create a four-color lithograph from aluminum plates, demonstrating the special techniques used in plate lithography.

Sunday July 2 at 10pm
“How to Draw Harry” Illustrator Mary Grandpre is featured in this film of her special class that taught ArtOrg’s summer kids how to draw Harry Potter.

ArtOrg Tonight! will also be rebroadcast the following Monday mornings at 3 am and 9 am. Thank you to the Tamarind Institute, Richard Fred Arey, and Gaylord Schanilec for permission to showcase these wonderful films.
