Day of the Dead vs. Halloween

October 27, 2009 By Dave Machacek

The Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos is an important Latino holiday. We have collected videos and other stuff from projects and celebrations in one place on our website. Please go here for a page we call “Learn About Day of the Dead”. The videos in particular may provide a good resource to explain the Day of the Dead traditions, because we have artists talking about their Day of the Dead inspired art, poet Ray Gonzalez reciting his related Day of the Dead works, and Day of the Dead scholar Juanita Garciagodoy talking about her book on the subject. The traditions of Dia de los Muertos are quite a bit different than Halloween!

Here is a link to the 14-minute high-definition video describing the event and the artist works. All nine artist prints turned out very well, and the art is now hanging at the museum until January 3, 2010. A special Day of the Dead celebration is planned in Fargo for November 7 from noon to 3pm. ArtOrg is also planning a Minneapolis showing of the prints for November 14, as well.

Thanks to everyone who helped out on the project. From Plains Art Museum, we particularly thank Director Colleen Sheehy, Andy Maus and Rusty Freeman. We also thank Rick Swearer who Continue Reading…

Twenty Views of Dundas Accessioned by Weisman Museum

The ArtOrg collaborative print project called the “Twenty Views of Dundas” was recently accepted into the permanent collection of the Fredrick R. Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota. We congratulate not only the artists and printers of the set, but also the people of Dundas who welcomed us into their homes, family photo albums, and historical records. Each of the twenty-one artists interpreted an aspect of the City’s history in a work of art, and working together with an art printer, created hand-pulled sets of prints in a very limited edition size. In this way, important aspects of Dundas have been Continue Reading…

ArtOrg Moving Walls Gallery 1

October 13, 2009 By Dave Machacek

Print StudioArtOrg has maintained two different facilities in downtown Northfield, but now after five years we are closing the gallery. Our office will be moving into our 2500-square-foot Printmaking Studio and Classroom on the riverside floor of 314 Division Street in Northfield. Please see the attached page for a retrospective of the gallery at 200 Division Street, where we held an average of eight significant exhibits per year over the five-year run. Watch for other gallery exhibits and activities in other locations—for example we are working on a large exhibit (that is too big physically to fit in the old gallery space) for late fall.

Several important details have been finalized with regards to the “Day of the Dead: Latino Artists Create Steamroller Prints” project. The main steamroller printing event is on Saturday and Sunday October 3rd and 4th at the Plains Art Museum in Fargo, North Dakota. The associated museum exhibit runs October 8, 2009 to January 3, 2010. There will be a community celebration on Saturday, November 7 from noon to 3pm at the museum. There are also two small steamroller printing events for kids scheduled at local Fargo/Moorhead schools, and those prints will also be part of the museum exhibit. All events around the activities at the Plains Art Museum will be added to the ArtOrg calendar, and everyone is welcomed to take part. Kari Alberg Governors Ball Lithograph
The 2009 Friends of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts has accepted the 2005 Northfield Sesquicentennial Governors Ball Lithograph for their yearly juried charity auction called Art Perchance on Friday, September 25. This event raises money for transportation of kids to MIA events. This year there was a record number of submissions to the auction and ArtOrg was pleased that our work was accepted. Last year, a set of the Twenty Views of Dundas was also accepted into this fundraiser with good results. The Friends of the Institute is a 87-year-old organization associated with the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
